EZ-Poly Concrete Crack Filler Test on stairway in
Carlsbad, California, February 8, 2005
Concrete that is chipped or broken is a challenge at best for most concrete repair companies. Cementatious materials have little of no sticking power to concrete, which makes it hard to support a beveled edge repair. EZ-Poly Concrete Crack Filler provides a strong adhesion to the concrete and it provides a fast filler capability to restore the edge of concrete structures.
One such problem can be seen in this concrete step where the rebar inside the step has rusted and expanded to force the leading edge of the step to break away. This Carlsbad California stairway also has deterioration of the step surface, making bare foot traffic uneasy at best. The edge of the step is sharp enough to cut bare feet, posing a risk management concern for the City.
Our test will show how EZ-Poly Concrete Crack Filler can be used to restore this step to full weight bearing strength in less than 24 hours. Both the broken edge and the delaminated surface of the step will be repaired with EZ-Poly Concrete Crack Filler.
EZ-Poly permanently sticks to concrete surfaces irrespective of the angle applied. Accordingly, the edge of this step can be repaired by making a form to pour EZ-Poly Concrete Crack Filler and fill in the missing portion of the step.
The recommended procedure for preparing and filling the concrete step is as follows:
Wire brush any flaking rust or concrete chips off of the rebar and edge of the step.
Prepare a temporary form to approximate the leading edge of the step. Use a mold release or rubber tape on the inside of the form to keep the EZ-Poly from sticking to the form. Position the form with C-clamps and pour the EZ-Poly Concrete Crack Filler into the form. Remember, EZ-Poly is most liquid immediately after it is mixed, so pour it in the form as soon as it is mixed.
Multiple applications can be made since EZ-Poly sticks to itself at any time in its curing process. Be sure to fill the form to the level of the step.
Carefully remove the form after two hours of curing. The EZ-Poly will have the consistency of hard clay after two hours of curing, allowing you to trim any excess EZ-Poly with a sharp knife or blade. It is recommended that you wait to trim the step until it is fully cured to get a uniform smooth leading edge.
Apply a layer of EZ-Poly over the surface of the step to fill the delaminated pitting and spalling. EZ-Poly can be feathered less than paper thin and still not chip or crack away with use. While the EZ-Poly is still wet sprinkle a layer of sand over the surface of the step. This will provide a skid proof surface for wet weather days.
Allow step to cure over night.
Shape the leading edge of the step with a belt or disc sander and paint the step with UGL garage floor paint (found to work well with EZ-Poly products).
